TAKE YOUR CHURCH ON A JOURNEY & JOIN GOD IN HIS MISSION

“We cannot be afraid to question structures and methods that once caused us to thrive and succeed. Church is a movement, not a monument.”

Alan Hirsch, Award Winning Author & Missional Activist

WHAT IS FUTURE TRAVELLERS?

Those involved in church leadership in Scotland are beginning to come to the conclusion that we cannot continue to do ‘business as usual’, but the prospect of change in our churches can feel like changing the wheels on the bus while the bus is still moving.

Forge, in partnership with Cairn, call Future Travellers the process which seeks to support churches and their leaders as they start conversations around where this journey could lead.

We provide resources and coaching, seeking to enable churches to create a culture that supports the goals of each church. We provide the means to introduce key ideas and practices needed to lead a church to be more dynamically missional. It is about a change of mind, a different way to look at what has always been, a change in the way we look at the world, the church, and God’s mission. However it is not just about ideas. We would love to resource churches with experienced practitioners who will work with you as a coach and mentor.

In addition we can facilitate workshops, conferences and small group conversations.  Please get in touch and we can have a chat about your specific needs. You can email Gill Wilson at gill@forgescotland.com

We’re caught up in this this model of church that has become stuck IN a period that society and culture is no longer engaging with. we’re living in a hope that something will change if it all comes around again and everything will be ok. The reality is that is not the case.

“I would highly recommend Forge as an organisation and the team themselves, many of whom I know and would count as friends. Combining missional thought-leadership and deep and inspiring practioner-driven coaching Forge creates the environment to spark Kingdom dreams and visions in leaders. The Forge team are living examples of the training itself and are able to walk alongside the ups and downs of pioneering missional leadership. If you have a Kingdom dream then these are the people and this is the place for you.”

The Menzieshill story

Menzieshill Church, Dundee, lies at the heart of a working class scheme encircled by private housing. We are a gathered congregation operating in the attractional/maintenance mode ie “doing church” the same way we’d done for 55 years but experiencing little progress. We knew change was needed. Bob introduced us to Forge’s work and called a team of 4 together, with different gifting’s, abilities and ages but all with a desire to see the church change, grow and make God known in our community.

We were determined not to be passengers on this journey but pioneers, engaging and experimenting with what has been taught through Future Travellers. We are exploring leadership in a new and different context from our previous understanding.  We are beginning to see a change in the leadership which is starting to filter down to early adopters in our church. The focus in going forward is getting to know our community at a deeper level, discerning needs and opportunities to serve and to be more incarnational in the community.

How Forge has helped

Forge has helped us to consciously re-connect with God’s original plan and the lordship & supremacy of Christ as the starting point to mission and building His church. They have helped us to position ourselves for change and have given us insight to the process, the management of change, its barriers and risks, but also, the great potential in adapting to these new ways of being and understanding church.  The teaching hasn’t been prescriptive but has provided us with tools suited to our individual situation. The provision of our wise mentor has been invaluable and hearing from others who are well on the road to change has been really helpful.   The Forge team are always there for us – supporting and challenging – it feels like family.

What’s next?

Our main focus is getting to know and love our community well and look for opportunities to engage where we can. Our mission audit will be done in the near future, so we pray for that, we will have a better idea where we are going after completing this exercise. We are seeking to partner with neighbouring churches and community groups to do mission as the body of Christ in unity. We hope to increase the number of discipleship groups so leaders are trained and equipped for mission. We are arranging future conference days with session and the congregation to unpack where we are going forward.  We keep evaluating what we are doing and where we are, to discern if we are reaching the goals we have set. This journey is exciting, sometimes scary but we continue to discern God’s leading and plan with wisdom.
